Lectures

Quilting, Computers, and the Internet

If you were thinking this lecture is just for those who use computer-quilting programs, your data file is corrupted (that means, "think again!")...This is a lecture about we are using computers to communicate with other quilters, shop, obtaining solutions to quilting problems , making new friends, finding out about resources, and on and on. Nancy explores all of the places you can go, things you can use to help you do your craft better, and ways you can protect yourself when you use the internet to shop and communicate. Not just for computer junkies, this is a lecture about what is happening. There will be quilts too...quilts that were created as a part of on-line swaps, quilts that were researched on line, and quilts that were created by using some aspect of computing.

Finish with a Punch: a Look at Borders and the Difference They Make

When the blocks are together and you’re ready to put the finishing touches on a quilt, do you ever wonder if a pieced border would make the quilt brighter or feel more complete? When you are designing your quilts, does the border become a question mark? This lecture explores borders and the difference they make in the planning and finishing of quilts. Nancy shows slides as she explores the aspects of borders that come into play, and then she shows a wide variety of quilts. Some are her successes, and some are not... Nancy shares the ones that didn’t work so you can learn from her mistakes... This is an informative, quilt-filled lecture that will leave you itching to make that next beauty!

Step Out of the Box: Adding Pizzazz to Tradition

Explore a variety of images of quilts, both traditional and slightly nontraditional in this lecture on designing and creating quilts that satisfy the quilter and the viewer. Sensational Seminole and Brilliant Borders

Seminole piecing is done by sewing strips together, cutting them apart and sewing them together to make intricate designs. It is an art form developed by the Seminole Indians of Southern Florida to embellish garments. Today, these bright, bold and beautiful Native American designs are a natural for quilting.

In this class we will create a wall quilt using rows of Seminole designs. In the process, participants will learn how to make all sorts of pieced designs that can be used for borders. We will explore the transition from Seminole piecing to borders, and the methods used to make the borders fit a specific quilt. We will use the book:

Fast, Fun and Finishedsanta_runner.png

In this class Nancy Tiffany will show you how to create placemats for the seasons or to fit the decore in your home. Use up fabric scraps, or purchase inexpensive theme fabric and have fun making a set for each season. This is a half-day class where you will learn how to use up bits of left over batting and make table runners and placemats you can give as gifts or save for yourself. Make something special for your children or grandchildren... Make matching napkins too.

Four Square Shuffledog_shuffle.png

Join Nancy Tiffany for a fun class using that fabric you bought becuase it lookied like fun, but haven’t been able to figure out what to do with it. You can make a wall quilt or baby quilt with as little as one yard of the focus fabric. Make a child’s bed quilt with two yards plus coordinating fabrics.

In this full day class we will cut four identical squares, then cut them diagonally. By shuffling the matching sections, each set will make a new square. You should be able to finish a wall quilt in class.

 Log Cabin Heartlog_cabin_heart.png

Nancy Tiffany will show you how to make the blocks quickly, trim them to size, and then how to lay out this fun and fast quilt. It can be made with small strips, creating a wall hanging, or with larger strips that make up to a kindg size quilt.

Two contrasting fabrics or groups of fabrics are needed. If you choose to use a group of darks, be sure that the tone is essentially the same for all of the fabrics. Do the same if you are using a group of lights. If you are using two fabrics, you may want to use a large to medium scale print for either the dark or light. Stripe will NOT work. The borders can be made of a border print or you can simply continue to use the two fabrics in the quilt. A border print can be used to set off the heart.

Paper Piece a Calendar Quiltcalendar.jpg

Paper piecing provides great accuracy when piecing intricate designs, but you don’t have to manage all of those tiny pieces! Make a quilt for all seasons while learning the basics of paper piecing!

It helps to know some tricks, but paper piecing is really quite simple. Nancy Tiffany will teach you how to sew from the back, and help you create the twelve blocks in this calendar quilt. This class is suitable for beginning quilters.

Digital Images in Quiltsangel_frogs.jpg

Learn how to transfer images from your digital library to cloth, and then make stunning quilts! You don’t have to be a computer expert to make quilts that include the people and places of your pictures!

Your ink jet printer can provide you with fabric pictures that can then be made into memory quilts or just fun explorations of people and places...Nancy Tiffany will show you how! You can also use images you have scanned or found on the internet to create patterns for your quilts. This class includes experiences with your images, printing on fabric, and then coming up with designs that will make your quilts more than a photo album on fabric!

Full Spectrum and Gradation Dyeing

Using either jars or baggies, Nancy Tiffany teachers a full day class that includes two dye projects: Full Spectrum, which will result in 12 fat quarters of fabric in the colors of the rainbow, and Gradations of the colors each participant chooses. For a half-day class, we will do one or the other. In class we will explore the properties of the dyes, and the ways in which texture and colors can be added or changed.

Creating Recognition & Commemorative QuiltsRecog.jpg

Nancy Tiffany will explore ideas with you about how to create small, simple quilts that can be used to express your appreciation or to recognize a particular occasion. She will help you determine your design, and then share a variety of techniques for completing the quilts.
